Kajiki est un terme désignant le makaire bleu du Pacifique qui est couramment utilisé autour des marchés aux poissons d’Hawaï et des flottes de pêche hauturières. Le nom de tous les marlins dans la langue hawaïenne est A’u, et cette distinction dérive du nom japonais Kurokajiki. Le makaire bleu est sans aucun doute l’istiophorèse le plus important de son environnement pélagique. En 1970, le plus gros makaire bleu du Pacifique jamais capturé à la canne et au moulinet, pesant 1 805 livres, a été débarqué par un groupe de pêcheurs à bord du bateau charter Coreene C piloté par le capitaine Cornelius Choy. Bien que les mâles dépassent rarement 300 livres et les femelles dépassent rarement 1 000 livres, il existe des femelles plus grosses. Des pêcheurs commerciaux auraient embarqué des poissons beaucoup plus gros, avec des rumeurs selon lesquelles un makaire bleu géant aurait été amené au célèbre marché de Tsukiji à Tokyo, au Japon, et pesait près de 2 500 livres. N'ayant pas les rayures évidentes du nairagi, alias marlin rayé, ce prédateur suprême compte sur son contraste de couleurs pour se fondre dans la masse.
